One roofing square is 100 square feet. Most shingles run three bundles to a square. This calculator applies your pitch and waste allowance, then returns squares, bundles, ridge cap, underlayment and nails.

How much waste should I allow?
Five percent covers a simple gable. Ten percent is the usual default. Budget fifteen percent or more for a hip roof with valleys, skylights or chimneys, because every cut into a hip or valley creates an off-cut too small to use.
How many bundles are in a square?
Three for standard three-tab and most architectural shingles. Heavier designer shingles can run four or five, so check the wrapper before ordering.
Is ridge cap included in the square count?
No. Ridge and hip cap is ordered separately at roughly three bundles per 100 linear feet.
