Does the gauge work on every phone?
It works on any phone that reports device orientation, which is nearly all of them, over an HTTPS connection. On iPhone you must tap Start gauge first because Safari asks permission before reporting motion. Desktop browsers have no tilt sensor, so use the manual entry or the standard calculator instead.
How accurate is it?
Phone accelerometers are typically accurate to around one degree, which is well inside the half inch in twelve tolerance that matters on a roof. Zero the gauge on a known flat surface first, and take readings in three or four places.
Where should I hold the phone?
From inside the loft, hold the long edge flat against the underside of a rafter. From outside, rest it on the roof surface itself or against the gable trim. Avoid holding it against tiles or shingles that overlap, since the steps will skew the reading.
Do I need to climb on the roof?
No. The attic reading against a rafter gives the same pitch as the outside surface and is far safer. Never go on a roof without proper fall protection.
