How do I measure roof pitch?

Hold a level horizontally against the rafter or roof surface. Measure 12 inches along the level from the point where it touches, then measure straight down to the roof. That vertical distance is your rise, and the pitch is written as that number over 12.

What is the most common roof pitch?

In the United States most residential roofs fall between 4/12 and 9/12. A 6/12 pitch is the classic middle ground. In the UK pitch is quoted in degrees and most houses sit between 35 and 45 degrees.

What is the difference between pitch and slope?

In everyday use they are treated as the same thing. Strictly, slope is rise over run expressed as X in 12, while pitch is rise over the full span. Building codes use the word slope.

Why does my roof area not match my house square footage?

A sloped roof always covers more surface than the footprint beneath it. Multiply the footprint by the pitch multiplier to get the real area. At 6/12 that is 11.8% more.
